Well Read(?): Fifty Shades of Grey

❆ 1/2 Mitten ❆

Well friends, I am a really nice person. Like, the best person ever. Why, you ask? Because I read Fifty Shades of Grey, so you don’t have to. I mean, unless you wanna read really poorly written smut based on Twilight. Then, by all means, this is the book for you.

I’m not really sure where to begin. I guess with a little about the book. Written by some British lady named E.L. James, apparently the story began as Twilight fan fiction and then, with some name changes, an underground ebook hit. Oh and part of this new fad called “Mommy Porn,” and appeals, I guess, to all the Twi-hard mothers out there who got kicks out of Stephanie Meyer’s chastity-based series. The ‘Bella’ of Fifty Shades is a literature student named Anastasia who has is a virgin and has no idea that any boys have every liked her. Just like Bella in Twilight who cannot fathom why she’s worth existing or talking to until Edward likes her. Actually, until she becomes a vampire and awesomely sparkly. Christian (Edward), is a wealthy billionaire who is young and sexy and into BDSM. And so begins a true love story of our time, when klutzy brunette interviews sexypants Christian, make his dingle dangle point towards her like due north. By “true love story” I obviously mean kinda graphic sex scenes punctuated by really stupid plots about drug addict mothers, feelings, and vengeful bosses.  Continue reading

Bunched Panties: Team Katniss

(Spoilers if you haven’t read the books)

Much of the buzz around The Hunger Games has been that it’s the “new Twilight.” I could go on and on about how that isn’t true (e.g. Bella wants to be worthy of someone loving her, Katniss is concerned about saving those she loves, which actually makes her worthy of love, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera…), but I thought links to some fan tattoos would do as much for my argument as a rant could. Twilight fans (or Twi-hards) are all focused on the love story and the strength of Edward “the lion” to Bella’s “lamb.” I mean, how much more metaphor about female weakness do you need, people? On the other hand, Hunger Games fans, well, they focus on the Mockingjay, the symbol of Katniss and the political rebellion she inspires against a totalitarian regime. So, yeah, totes not the same.

Now Playing: The Hunger Games

❆ ❆ ❆ 3 1/2 Mittens ❆ ❆ ❆

(SPOILERS!!!)

This weekend, the hotly anticipated film adaptation of the newest YA novel sensation, The Hunger Games, opened to gazillions of dollars and confirmed that Katniss Everdeen is Hollywood’s next big thing. And, as an avid (and pushy!) fan of the dsytopic series, I obviously went to see it. I admit that I was extremely nervous, despite long supporting Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. She was exactly as I imagined Katniss to be in Winter’s Bone and, despite being older, curvier, whiter, and blonder than our literary heroine, I felt like she could capture the essence of “The Girl on Fire.” I was not wrong. Jennifer Lawrence’s performance, though beautified to fit Hollywood standards (come on, she’s supposed to be stinky and smelly and burned and have blood coming out of her ear, not have eyeliner on!), captures the hardness and determination of Katniss with just the look in her eyes and the set of her mouth. Well, as much as the script, co-written by original author Suzanne Collins, allows her to… but more on that later.  Continue reading
