Soapbox: Awareness Raises Nothing or Kony 2012

About a month ago, everyone I know on Facebook was posting this video called Kony 2012. I immediately became suspicious. When everyone is sharing something, so quickly, they often having thought anything about it and are riding on some “awareness raising train.” That really makes me give out side eye, y’all.

I’m not against awareness raising, per se. Hell, it’s what I do here. However, to me there are two kinds of awareness raising. There’s pointing out to someone when they are being insensitive or racist or uncool and why, and then there’s putting up posters about some issue you really have no interest in or plan on doing anything about other than wearing a bracelet. Kony 2012 is the latter. And somehow it managed to combine two groups of simple-minded people into one cause, the ‘Oprah’ watchers (who don’t realize they are being sold stuff wrapped in “philosophy” so that O’s empire can continue to grow) and the alternative college-aged crowd (who put up PETA posters at Thanksgiving but have no problem with the fact that PETA sexually objectifies human women for any and all reasons). I mean, really? Harnessing those two types of people together in an attempt to change the world… by putting posters up and sharing videos on Facebook and buying bracelets? Genius. Continue reading

Soapbox: Republicans, Racism, and the Reality of Poverty

Newt Gingrich, who has made quite the comeback from “does he seriously think he can be President?” to “holy crap, this guy might actually be the GOP candidate!”, sadly came in second yesterday in the Florida primaries. Despite the fact that this is a large blow to his campaign (Florida is a “take all delegates” state), he’s refusing to end his campaign. Or back down from his racially charged language, as evidenced by last night’s fight between his Super PAC head, Rick Tyler, and Al Sharpton on the Rachel Maddow Show. Before we get into to that argument, let’s start with a little background… Continue reading

Soapbox: Understanding Occupy Wall Street

I know my earlier post today might seem like I’m disillusioned with Occupy right now, but I’m not. I’m bothered by their alleged response to sexual violence, but I also realize that as much as a movement is the people who make it up, those people are also a product of our society and, as such, are as flawed as that society is. Sure, I’m pissed about what has happened. But, I also know that the Occupy movement has done a great job of challenging the values we all seem to be stuck with: buy buy buy, work work work, bills bills bills. Admittedly, I might not the best example of their anti-materialism focus… I love my new fancy TV after years and years with an old TV and no cable, but I also really really love TV and movies. As this site clearly attests to, I argue that they are an important part of our society that not only has the ability to challenge our values and perceptions, but also a medium we have the ability and obligation to challenge right back. I also own a lot more clothes than I would like, partially due to my medical weight gain over the past few years. Listen, you can’t wear sweats to a government job–Girl had to buy real pants. And, you know, some cute tops, obviously! What about my 900+ books, when I’m a library-card carrying member of society? Well, I’ll never apologize for those! I am determined to figure out what magic spell Hermione did to carry the gang’s stuff in Deathly Hallows and then I will carry my books with me everywhere. Ev. Ry. Where. Anyhow… the point is not that I feel a teensy bit guilty about my TV or my recent pillow purchases from IKEA. It’s that I think those pillows are fabulous for reading one of my too many books in bed!

No, all kidding aside, it’s really that OWS has done a lot right, like getting people to even think about materialism. No movement is perfect, nor are it’s members. We have an obligation to challenge them when they misstep, but we that doesn’t mean that what they are saying is any less true (see also: Ghandi and MLK).

Soapbox: We’re a Culture, Not a Costume

This post is actually not about things that annoy  me, but about a wonderful campaign to combat things that do annoy me: halloween costumes that appropriate indigenous peoples/ethnic groups!

Happy Halloween!!!

Now go get stoopid drunk as a pumpkin or a fish or something that isn’t a sexy = insert occupation or ethnic group.

Soapbox: 10 Years Later

On the 10th Anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, I felt I’d be remiss not to acknowledge the day and the lives lost… and the lives impacted afterwards, from soldiers in Iraq to the American citizens who are currently losing social services because of a deficit caused by our insane war response. But I’m not going to go into a rant about the Bush Administration and how they used the War on Terror to pig-tie our country hostage for their war-mongering, fascist police state. Even though they did…

Instead, I’m going to talk about me and how I felt on 9-11. And why my feelings don’t matter at all.
