Geeking Out: Fake Geek Girls

A recent article in Forbes, told the so-called “fake geek girls” to go away. That they might act like they were into sewing to get a good Instagram shot, but wouldn’t deign to take Saturday classes for their “hobby.” That there is a “right” way to be part of an underclass and that if you don’t meet this criteria, you can’t join the club.

I have to admit that I have had a similar reaction, notably when I went off really hard on New Girl. Personally, I think the animosity is born from the co-opting of “geek” culture and pastiche, while still relegating people originally within that social class to the loser table at lunch. Although, if 21 Jump Street is an accurate depiction of today’s high schools, maybe the losers are the jocks and the bros now. Honestly, I have a hard time believing that if I’d just been born a few years later I’d be cool and popular. But maybe that would be due to my overall personality, not my obsession with Star Trek.  Continue reading

Geeking Out: Star Wars-Dysmorphia Disorder

A long time ago, in a galaxy that we live in… George Lucas conceived of one of the most popular films of time, the space opera Star Wars. Originally produced as a trilogy, Star Wars become a cultural touchstone for my generation. Many of us know every word, watch the films on repeat, and have bonded with our friends or spouses over the Buddhist-like Force that binds all living things together. Some of us have fantasized about being Princess Leia or Han Solo or Luke Skywalker (or sleeping with them!) and a lot of us have used flashlights as lightsabers, utterly disappointed that this doesn’t really work as we hoped it would. These films are a part of who we are as individuals and as a culture.

And then… George Lucas decided to fuck with them. Since practically the beginning, Lucas has been changing and adding and tweaking them until they are the film equivalent of Michael Jackson’s face: we still see what we loved, but it’s so distorted we can’t help but feel sad.

Geeking Out: Han Solo Knows

I love Star Wars, in case you hadn’t picked up on that with my Blu Ray rants a few months back. So, I decided to make my first meme using my favorite character, Captain Han Solo, who knows everything.

Enjoy!

Geeking Out: Knope/Taylor 2012

My favorite episode of Parks and Recreation so far this season has to be “Citizen Knope,” which I apparently enjoyed watching so much, I never got around to reviewing it. Erm… Anyhow, in the episode, Leslie Knope is on suspension from the Pawnee Parks and Rec department due to her relationship with her supervisor (and nerd-mate), Ben Wyatt. Because Leslie is amazing and dedicated and everything I ever hope to be, she sets up a citizen committee during her free time and to my utter delight, inspires them with the tagline from Friday Night Lights. The fact that Leslie loves that show makes me love Parks and Recreation even more than I already do now. Which is about as much as Leslie loves sugar. Continue reading

Geeking Out: Can’t Get You Outta My Head…

When I was working on my “fave things of 2011″ list a few weeks ago, as we bloggers are contractually required to do, I realized that all of the items were things I’m either still obsessed with, and many of which I’m promised to get more of in 2012. So, I guess the Universe is trying to tell me that it condones my obsessions with the following books, shows, memes, and music? Or at least tolerates me geeking out and watching them on repeat?

Either way, these are the things I just can’t get outta my head, even if the calendar page has changed…
